The Waverley Trail
The Belmont Land Trust serves as the umbrella 501(C)(3) tax exempt organization for the Waverley Trail Advisory Committee. The Waverley trail takes a visitor though an area which has played a significant role in this country’s history of land preservation. In a ceremony honoring stewards of Waverley Oaks for the past 120 years, Belmont resident Jim Levitt said “Waverley Oaks inspired Charles Eliot to call for the creation of the first land trust in the world, the Trustees of Reservations.”
Western Greenway
The Western Greenway consists of adjacent parcels of undeveloped conservation land in Belmont, Lexington and Waltham and is an invaluable resource for all three communities.
Mass Audubon’s Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Belmont Hill, just 6 miles northwest of downtown Boston. It is an 88-acre urban oasis that has been devoted to environmental education since 1970. The Sanctuary has over 2.5 miles of walking trails that wind through deciduous and evergreen forests, across meadows, around 2 ponds, and along a wetland containing a vernal pool.
